On the mountain, you’ll be accompanied by a team of guides, cooks, and porters. The Kilimanjaro porters will be in charge of your bags as well as tents, kitchen equipment, food, fuel, tables, and chairs.

Which is a good thing because now you can conserve energy and focus on reaching the summit successfully. But on the downside, you have a weight limit to stick to.  Also, it is our responsibility to be aware of the welfare of porters during your Kilimanjaro Hike.

Packing for Kilimanjaro Trip is Different than Your Other Trips

Climbing Kilimanjaro is unique in so many ways. From your origin to summit, you’ll be navigating through several distinct climate zones. At a certain point, Kilimanjaro Trek might feel like traveling from the equator to Antarctica in a matter of days. The weather on Kilimanjaro can vary from very hot to extremely cold within the span of a single day. This essentially means you need to pack hiking gear for all weather!

To help you with your Kilimanjaro preparation, we have put together a comprehensive Kilimanjaro packing list. With this list, you can rest assured you will be fine on the mountain.   

Carrying equipment for Kilimanjaro Hike

You need to bring the following carrying equipment to Mt. Kilimanjaro:

  • 1 daypack (between 30 and 45 liters)
  • 1 daypack rain cover
  • 1 duffel bag (between 60 and 100 liters)
  • 1 water bladder
  • 1+ water bottle

Backpack

You need to have two types of bags that for your Kilimanjaro trekking expedition – a Kilimanjaro daypack and a duffle bag. Your main pack will be carried by Kilimanjaro porter. Normally, they tend to wear backpacks so a duffel bag is most preferable.

Kilimanjaro Day Pack List

At Kilimanjaro, You’re expected to prepare your daypacks (or backpacks). You’re supposed to pack all other items into a duffel bag for the Kilimanjaro porters.  So you need to pack your Kilimanjaro daypack strictly according to your need during of the day. Baggage weight is restriction is 5-10 kg. Your bag must include:

  • your prepared first aid kit
  • sun hat
  • sunglasses
  • energy bar
  • 3 L water bottle
  • rain trousers and coat
  • camera
  • fleece sweater
  • hiking poles

Kilimanjaro Clothing List

You need warm clothes for the high altitude of Kilimanjaro. Pack only necessary clothing as per the season. If you’re Climbing Kilimanjaro in summer, pack full sleeve clothes. And if it's a wet season Kilimanjaro Hike, go with warm clothes. Have a look at our list of Kilimanjaro Climbing Wear.

  • 4 pairs of thick trekking socks
  • 3-4 thermal undergarments
  • 4 thermal t-shirts
  • Underwear
  • 2 thermal long-sleeved tops
  • Normal t-shirts
  • 1 fleece sweater
  • 1 ski-mask
  • 1 balaclava
  • 1 sun hat
  • 1 pair of sunglasses (with UV protection)
  • 1 pair of thin warm gloves
  • 1 pair of thick warm gloves
  • 1 pair of rain trousers/waterproof trousers
  • 1 rain jacket
  • 2 pairs of warm trousers
  • 1 winter jacket

Toiletries and medicine for Kilimanjaro Hike

We recommend you pack the following personal items:

  • Toilet paper
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Wet wipes
  • Small, quick-drying towel
  • Lip balm
  • Sunscreen
  • Regular plasters
  • sports tape
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Malaria tablets
  • Diarrhea tablets (a common symptom of altitude sickness)
  • Painkillers (for headaches; a common symptom of altitude sickness)

All these stuffs are pretty much self-explanatory. You must know that while being on the mountain there will be no shower facilities. However, we’ll provide a bucket of water for cleaning purposes or as we call it ‘washy washy’ every day.

Gear on the Mountain

  • Waterproof clothes
  • A 3-liter water system or 3-liter water bottle
  • A thermos flask
  • 1 pair of hiking poles
  • 1 pair of gaiters
  • 1 sleeping bag
  • 1head torch + spare batteries
  • 1 waterproof rack sack and 1 poncho.

Kilimanjaro Tech Gear List

Kilimanjaro doesn’t have a great cell phone reception. Only some of the campsites, namely Baranco, Karanga, Barafu, Mweka, Tarn Hut, and Horombo have reception.

  • Covid-19 certificate

As per the new covid-19 guideline, it is mandatory to produce a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19. And please don’t forget your passport. In fact, make it your number one item on Kilimanjaro Gear List.
